As I lost my bet with Joe McDonald, my New York Hockey Report co-host, I will be positive about the Rangers today. (Well - I will not be throwing a parade for them, but I will be nice).
Basically, the better team won last night. The Rangers won the battles in the corners, were skating better than the Isles, and seemed to be a lot more peppier in their motions that the Islanders, who were playing the 3rd game in 4 nights.
The new acquisitions for the Rangers, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez were involved in the scoring, and looked much more alive in this game, than they have in the past few.
Lundqvist did a nice job tonight, a yeoman’s effort.
That is about it for the pleasantries.
Hollweg should be SHOT. Deliberately going to attack on Martinek’s stitches and trying to make them bleed… Nice. Someday, he is going to get belted worse than Simon’s hit, and you know what, I won’t be surprised or shocked. I do not wish for these things to happen, but he is just an antagonist whose antics are not good for the game of hockey.
Now to the Isles. You could see how they were dragging on the ice. They will not admit to it, but they are a tired bunch. With all of that layoff time, these 3 in 4 game stretches will test a team. Last night - they did not fare well on that test. Comrie finally decided to shoot, and got a goal. He just needs to do that a great deal more often. Guerin is shooting and playing harder. Maybe that shootout goal gave him some impetus to get his act in gear.
Berard did well, in setting up the PP, the rest of the guys need to finish a little more.
I just love the intensity and the passion that Richard Park puts on each and every game.
DP - a little shaky; just leave it at that. IMHO - Dubie MUST start tomorrow. Give Ricky a break, and let him play his childhood team on Monday. We need him fresh, and Dubie needs to see a puck somewhere other than a practice session.
It was inevitable that the Isles had to lose to the Rangers once in a while. I just dont want it to be a habit. I am sure that my friend Margaret (www.myblueshirtheaven.com) will be excited and have an interesting report. Check it out. The Metro Mug standings are as such:

Well - now that we did not beat the Rangers last night - we should not have the Post Ranger Game Withdrawal symptoms…..
Bring on the Thrashers….Â

So says Martinek. His word against Hollweg. Show me the footage of him doing what you are accuing Hollweg of. Play the audio of him saying that to Martinek. If you can’t, it’s libel.

My dear Margaret,
Their reputations (and their careers) speak for themselves. With the exception of you angelic fans, 44 is known for his chippy, nasty, dirty play. He is protecting Orr? That would be like telling a jockey to protect Shaq!
Get out of your clouds. Hollweg acts they way he acts to get into players faces. And if you ever met and talked to Martinek, (I have) you would know that he is NOT ONLY quiet and unassuming, but he has been in only 1 fight in 6 years and will not bring himself down to Hollweg’s level.
If it was another Ranger, I may have questioned that comment, but since it was A-Hollweg, it just gleams of the truth, and the truth will set you free.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Hey Gary, ask yourself this:
If Martinek is such a shrinking violet, why was Hollweg trying to keep him out of the mix during the scrum?
As far as Hollweg proteccting Orr, that’s just BS. Three of your “heros” were hammering Orr. That’s Islander sportsmanship for you. And THEN Orr gets the double minor and neither Witt or Simon get and instigator.
Fatty McGoo tried his best to hand your team another game but you poor widdle fellas were soooo tired.
Teddy such just shut his mouth. He’s lucky he wasn’t down two men.
I’ll have Hollweg send you team a case of CherryPharm and a lace hanky to wipe their tears.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Margaret…
Was the picture on when you watched the game or did you just have an obstructed view seat? Watch the replay again. Brendan Witt NEVER threw a punch at Orr. Nor did Comrie. In fact, when Witt came over to Comrie’s aid, Orr threw the first punch at him. Even your homerific announcer Sam Rosen said so. Witt didn’t throw a punch and got a roughing penalty. Simon threw four and got nothing so I guess it evened out. Orr threw a cheap hit and the first punch and got what he deserved. So as far as our “three heroes”, you really need to get a clue. You don’t get instigators when you don’t throw a punch (Witt) or someone else (Orr) throws the first punch.
Take off your Rangers colored glasses. The Rags won the game because they played better. Plain and simple. The officiating had nothing to do with who won or lost. I don’t hear you wondering why the last goal wasn’t at least reviewed considering the camera from the net showed it clearly went off a Rangers’ skate. It should have been allowed, but also reviewed, but since it benefitted you, why would you question it?
As for Hollweg, explain to me how a guy with a total of 9 points in 155 NHL games and 226 PIM is even still in the league. Hollweg is a joke. He runs people from behind constantly and often leaves his feet to throw hits. You are worried about what you preceive as a “libelous” comment concerning Hollweg’s antics, what about Dolan’s mouthpiece Al Troutwig. One word of truth hasn’t escaped his lips in a decade. Hollweg has no business in an NHL uniform simply because he has no skill. He is a joke as a player and every Rags fan knows it.
You won A GAME against the Islanders this season. Congratulations. The same Rangers fans who cried when we won in the Garden last time because the Rags had to play BACK TO BACK NIGHTS don’t seem to mind it happened to the Isles this time…oh, that’s right. Only “injustices” happen to the Rangers. Stop crying even when you won a game and show some class for a change. It would be a nice change from an organization who’s fans have been beaten up by the Bruins, have sexual harrassment allegations both on the ice and in the owners “other” franchise and continues to give a lowlife like Sean AVery a paycheck.

Phil, thank you for articulating your thoughts and being considerate of the readership enough to spell check and use proper grammar.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Margaret, your grammar is atrocious. How old are you? Did they not teach proper spelling and grammar in elementary school. You should be ashamed of yourself.
As for Hollweg, you can tell him that he can stick his three (that’s 3) career (not season, but CAREER) goals, and stick them where the sun doesn’t shine.
Hollweg goes after a guy who doesn’t fight in Martinek. Oh that is real big of you Ryan. You’re a real tough guy. But how come every time Chris Simon even LOOKS at you, your boyfriend Colton Orr has to come run and save you?
Margaret, take off the Red and Blue colored glasses. You’re seriously derranged if you think Hollweg was right.
And if the situation was reversed and it was the RANGERS who played the night before and lost, I could just imagine the excuses the class-less Rags fans would be dishing out. “Oh they were tired” “The Refs screwed us” “Potvin Sucks”. Blah blah blah blah.
And remember kids,
1994 was the Chinese Zodiac year of the FLUKE!
November 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
Yo Madge… I watched the game and could care less what may have been “said” regarding the stitches….however I did watch, in disgust, Hollweg INTENTIONALLY go after those stiches…it was blatent intent to harm. Having played the game for many years, I’m sure you are quite familiar with the concept right? Oh wait, have you played the game or are you just another expert bystander? I think it is apparant you didn’t actually watch the game, or maybe those red & blue tinted glasses abscured your vision.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t the NHL remove the Instigator penalty??
If they didn’t I assume Sean Avery would spend the entire game in the box.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
Libel? You are accusing this blogger of LIBEL? Then you may as well accuse the rest of the main-stream media. But as noted, you do not need to know verbatim what Hollweg SAID. Actions speak louder than words, and what he did was disrepectful and cruel. Martinek was brave enough to remove the shield because it was obstructing his view. He did it for his team. To have Hollweg purposly go after his face is unforgivable. Of course, YOU will forgive him because you have blue blinders on. But please note that the man you are protecting has been called a dirty player by the Canadian media. And I believe one quote I remember from last season was “…. he will end someone’s career some day.” I look forward to his retirement. The sooner, the better for the league.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
I shouldn’t even be getting involved, but why argue with someone who has already stressed the fact that she doesn’t watch other NHL teams and strictly looks at things from a “Rangers” point of view?
That’s what she TOLD ME AND THE REST OF THE PEOPLE ON THE NY HOCKEY REPORT a month ago.
For the record, Hollweg is not only a sub-par player on the ice, he has no class as well. Martinek suffered a serious injury the game before and was just trying to keep Hollweg out of the scrum. Rubbing your glove on his stitches is just a dirty, disgusting thing to do.
Anyone who would defend that type of action probably hangs out with Michael Vick and strangles puppies.

Cain- I do try to write unlike a BOCES graduate which I’m afraid Margaret hasn’t grasped yet. If she came on here and did the usual Rag gloating after a win, fine. But to claim that Radek Martinek, who has been a class act his entire career and never opens his mouth let alone gets involved in controversies, is somehow falsifying the fact that Hollweg went after his stitches is laughable and just shows how little credibility Margaret has. In a court of law, who is the more believeable witness based on their track records…Hollweg or Martinek.
Hollweg is a no talent whom Rangers fans will do nothing but talk down about once they finally deal his unskilled arse. Just as Margaret has forgotten how her Rag fan cohorts cried about playing us in the second game of a back to back when we won last time in MSG, but now she takes glee in beating us on the tail end of our back to back.
Gotta tell you Margaret, you have the consistency of a purjured witness and the same credibility as Hollweg. (that means NONE in case you couldn’t figure it out).
November 30th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Sybo,
Thank you very much for the clip. In it, you can clearly see that mild mannered Martinek started with Hollweg as he came to help Orr (who had Comrie, Witt and Simon wailing on him). To Orrs credit, He punched Witt square in the face before Witt got a shot off.
And, you are all so quick to convict Hollweg on Martinek’s whining, you failed to see Martinek’s own countryman, Mean Mean Michel Rozsival punch Martinek square in the stitches before Hollweg laid a hand on Martinek.
Oh, yeah, nice homer calls on FSNY.
Hickey, change your name. You have NO right to have the same name as one of my all time favorite Rangers. It’s a sad day, so it is to see a fellow Irishperson so misguided.
Hey Harding, you any relation to Tonya?

I am typed and deleted a dozen comments, but you know what - you are not worth the effort of typing.
I am so sorry that you are such an angry, resentful, vengeful person, with one of the worst cases of obnoxiousness that I have ever seen.
But you know that is what people around the NHL’s other rinks think of the Rangers, and their fans. You just personified it - 100%.
I will leave it at that.
November 30th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Hahaha… the sarcasm here is thick, like some of the heads.
1. I agree, it happens a lot - targetting an injury. Let’s be real.
2. There are many polarized views on both sides of this situation.
3. We’re all probably fans of our teams for the same reasons: loyalty.
4. Each team epitomizes the general fan base.
5. The Rangers suck.

Wow. You are SUCH a mature lady…NOT.
You are a tool ma’am.

Holy Snikees does this woman need help. I have known completely insane, head buried in the mud Ranger fans before, but this Typifies that Beyond the realm of words. Hollweg is a goon. Watch other games and teams beyond your loser Rangers, talk to Real hockey fans and stop defending one of the three guys on your team who have enough combined hockey talent than, Maybe, either of my one month old nephews. Avery isn’t the only piece of crap the blue shirts are carrying on their roster, for sure.
It’s a shame that someone with such a clearly idiotic perspective can take away from my desire to even write about the game and admit to the fact that the Rangers came to play and we didn’t. Considering we won the first 3 over a team anointed to win the cup by all the hockey “experts”, I’d say it’s about time you won One game against us. Without your Swedish meatball goaltender, you’d be riding 15 in the conference, and, yes, without Ricky, perhaps, some might say we might only be a few points ahead of you. Four points …. Actually, overall, I think the Isles have played a lot harder and more consistently well compared to the Rangers thus far, regardless of our similar offensive “prowess”.

Such witty jokes. Did you think of them all yourself? Please leave the jokes to the professionals. In fact, leave posting for those who can see what is going on because you couldn’t. Comrie and Witt NEVER THREW A PUNCH at Orr. All Comrie did was stand up and Witt was punched but never threw one back, so stop your crying already.
And donsidering you’ve seen the cup ONCE in 67 years, I’d really think about calling out a team that has won it 4 times in their 35 years of existance. The only reason the Rangers aren’t the biggest joke in the league is due to the fact that Toronto apparently wants the mantle of ineptitude. You call out Charles WAng? How’s Dolan doing lately? Sexual harrassment in his offices of the Knicks, coach being blackmailed, and he gives a lowlives like AVery & Hollweg a paycheck. A real Sodom you guys have over there at MSG. Reminds me of the old Time Square pre-Guliani
