Yes - he is 38 years old… Yes - he is coming off his worst season ever…
Why would Garth take him?
I think he is got a good nucleus of young talent here… I think a player of Weight’s experience in and out of the trenches, is a good thing for this predominately young team to have.
Some of my buddy’s who like the team of Blue and Red, think this move is dumb. Their mentality when it comes to selecting players is the main reason. Even with a salary cap, the Blueshirts still have the though process to get the best player possible. With the Islanders, building from the youth initiative in full swing, getting great role models to work with the Okposo’s and Comeaus, and Bailey’s of the world, I think Snow did the right thing.
Is Weight going to relive his 35-55-90 scoring years? No. Is he going to be your #1 option? No. But is he going to work with the younger talent, and make them better? Absolutely yes. Having one of your best friends as the Captain, will also be a help.
Let’s ride this one out, and see whether it is a help. If this team does something different than last year (stay healthy), this move could prove to be good for the small money it took to get it done.
