Scott Gordon visits the Booster Club

Comments:
Metro Mug

When he looked at the Metro Mug, Scott commented:

“I would like to see a shinnier silver trophy instead of that one…”

Metro Mug

Was surprised that the hit on Chris Lee did not warrant a suspension. He did not know about it until I asked the question.

Was pleased that Ricky played 60 minutes, despite the lack of playing. Is confident that he will be in the lineup, and if the timing is right, he WILL play. Ricky is chomping at the bit.

Bailey – he has so much hockey intelligence. He may be here one game, he may be here for the season. The process of the NHL will be so much easier for him, because of his intelligence. He is
head and shoulders’ better than some guys I know with three years of experience.

Nate Thompson – (Gordon’s former captain in Providence) classic blue collar player. We will like the intangibles..

Thoughts on Tambellini – we have to see if his ability will translate to the same success at the NHL level. He was not given the opportunity to fully play to your potential. He has to play, make the mistakes, and learn from them.

Working with the teams. There are times that I will have to be tough, and I will let them know that. The players welcome direction. He is not a ‘my way or the highway’ coach, but the players and the coaches have to work together.

System – training is the core of the matter (over-speed). Doing it in practice, will make the game easier. Making the practice more intense, will make the game a lot easier to handle. It does not happen overnight, but in time, the system will take over. Some games in the exhibition were good (even the 6-0 game – Scott thought the team executed, and there were positives, with the less than full lineup). The idea of game setup is making sure that the team is constantly moving forward, instead of the opponent coming to them. We have to be efficient coming out of the zone.

Penalty Kill – be aggressive….. We dont want our horses to play with snow tires.

Power Play – not normally a 4 forward 1 d – not liking to be high risk…

Riding the goaltender – It usually comes down to the schedule. Want to give Ricky every advantage to be successful. He wants to play every game. Any rest that goals to the #1 goalie is dependent on the schedule.

The injury bug – thought the early injuries may have been to the change in the system. Scott seems to be leading to the skates being stiff. Talking to some of the other coaches, they feel it may be the same thing. The soft ice surfaces can be a problem…

Playing days in Quebec. Probably like being in Atlanta and not saying y’all. Quebec was passionate about the game, but at least he had his chance to play and experience the NHL.

Sillinger – hopefully be back in November.

Shootout – Gordon may have a secret weapon. (I am not allowed to say, but it is someone you would NEVER expect) Looks as shootouts as ties. Looking at a half full glass instead of half empty. It is entertainment. What happens is secondary, just have fun.

Coaches on the bench – they go about it the right way… They come across as great professionals with excellent attitudes. They go about it the right way, and the veterans that take that attitude, seems to rub off on the younger players. They exert, and make he efforts in practices, will keep from letting down the teammates.

Thoughts on Jack Hillen – not big – but extremely intelligent. Would not play professionally if he did not have the smarts. Has the tools as well; he gets it! Instincts far more than exceed what a minor leaguer can do. See what he will handle the change from the college schedule to the NHL schedule.

Great meeting – 2 days to hockey, yea!!!!

Hopefully for Ricky – it’s Rust….

First game since 3/15/08…

Not a good way to start.

I know the game was on XM204, but by the time I got home, I did NOT want to put on my computer… After looking at one for 12 hours, it was just not the right thing to do.

I hear Rusty Olesz laid out Chris Lee with a nasty check from behind… Got a Game, and I am sure a review with the league. Good – get a few games for that Rusty!

Final of 4-3 for the Preseason… Not bad.. Friday – it counts for good. No – I will not be in NJ. I hope to get home for the start of the game, however, and I hope I will try to write a little at home. I will be writing at the game on Saturday. My wrap up will appear after the game…

Wow – I sound like a writer now!

Tomorrow – NYIBC Booster Club meeting – LI Marriott – guest is Scott Gordon. 7:30 at the ampitheater. You can join that night, or else it is $5 to come (but that can be applied towards membership – if you join that night).

A great chance to find out what is in the mind of the coach, as he prepares for his first NHL game (for real) behind the bench. I am interested in his comments.

Now – time to concentrate on training

Now that the coach is in place, (like or dislike) it is not time for the lads to get themselves ready for camp. We are now less than a month from the start of camp in Atlantic Canada. Now is the time to start having those protein shakes, beginning the dry-land workouts. Getting the skates sharpened, and working on the power drills.

Time to concentrate on the fitness.

What does that mean for fans….

Basically no talk at all. There are a few free agents that are still on the market, but for the Isles, I believe that we are done, and with about $12,000,000 in extra money. We are above the salary floor, but we are not that many steps above it.

So relax, faithful of the blue and orange… Enjoy the summer season. The weather is nice (at least this weekend, it is), so get out and get some rays. I will be at the Ducks tonight – so it should be a nice evening at the ballpark.

And my Toffees are back (for you just Islander fans – you can pass on this…). Everton FC have started their English Premier league campaign this day, as Blackburn Rovers visit Goodison Park in Liverpool, home of the Everton side. With US Goalkeeper Tim Howard at the helm, the Toffees are looking to move up this season and reach the top 4 in the league, which gains admission to the Champions League, the best cup competition in soccer each year. As I am writing this, however, Everton is down 1-0, and they do not look sharp at all. The team is missing a few starters (one to injury and a few are at the Olympic Games in Beijing) and they just do not look as sharp as they should be.

Also – I went to see Neil Diamond (no – not the guy in the Islanders Booster Club) at MSG on Thursday night. Good show. He talk lyrics more than he used to, but it is still a good show. A lot of verses of Sweet Caroline….

Wo, wo, wo….

Anyway – have fun as the summer winds down, and we will talk, should anything important come up. BY the way, I am hoping that I will be a part of the Islander Blog Box this season. I hope to hear soon about it. That would be nice for me… Wish me luck!

Down to Three

Paul Maurice

Bob Hartley

Scott Gordon

The final three… Will it resemble a final round of a Miss America Competition, where one answer to one question will give the finalist a chance to win…

My question to each candidate:

1. Maurice. Paul – what motivation tools will you use to get the youngsters going, when it seems that they are struggling with their play?

2. Hartley. Bob, there are times that you have seem to be down on the younger talent. What makes us think that you will not go back to that same attitude that seemed to be your undoing in Atlanta?

3. Gordon. Scott, we know your experience with the young talent; what do you see yourself doing to get the older talent to get moving in your direction?

Look – I am not Bert Parks, but hey – it’s a start.

I still look for Hartley. I am just of the opinion that brining up people to their first NHL coaching job, is enough. I want someone with experience. I know that Hartley is not the best with the youngins, but I think he can be. The relationship with coach and GM is a paramount, and Garth does have it with Bob.

well – that is my hope.

I came back from the NHL Booster Club Convention in Chicago. It was a great time! The five crazy women that ran this whole show, did a tremendous job, and deserve all the kudos.

No other news to report….

Back on NYHR tonight (hopefully)….

Have not been on in a while, and I hope the other two are with me tonight, or it will be a quick update, and off.

I am off to the NHL Booster Club Convention next week, so I am not sure that I will be on then. Maybe a call in – we’ll see…

Nothing new going on in Islander land, so no need to post at this time. Just hearing that names are coming by to stop and talk to Mr. Snow.

From late July – to early September, it is real tough to talk puck… Except —

Interesting move by Minnesota to release Mark Parrish with 3 years left on the contract. They said it was a salary cap move. You release a hometown boy with 8 million left on a contract, 32 years old and 3 years remaining, and two weeks before you sign Owen “I am ready for Medicare” Nolan to a contract….???

Hey Doug Reisbrough, are you on Dope? (Great Question, Mr. Hand…)

Now – I can hear Isles fans saying… “Let’s get him back!!!”

Interesting thought – but no.
