Bolts – Isles 4/4/09

Joensuu, Fritz, Rechlicz, Fraser and Iggulden are up. I know that Bridgeport is playing here for the first 2 games of their Calder Cup Playoff run, but did we need a preview?

I do not mean that to be negative, but you have to wonder about the injuries on this club. The last two seasons, we have been so decimated, it is so tough to swallow.

Witter’s hair is getting so long, it is almost starting to cover some of his last name on the jersey.

And speaking of jersey’s…. Isn’t the 3rd jersey so awesome? 10-11 season, it will be permanent – thank God!

Danis starting tonigh – hoping for a little better effort tonight… But for the life of me – why is Fritz here? The box has been wondering about that, maybe Smith, or someone else could have been here. The team has Jackman and Rechlicz here – did we need the enforcing Trio Grande?triogrande

1st Period

Starters – Danis – Gervais, Hillen, Comeau, Bailey, Jackman

Bob Nystrom award was announced… The winner was Tim Jackman – and it was a excellent choice!

Key to this game – win faceoffs. And we won the opening one. Good job Josh.

23 seconds in
– Park pushes it past McKenna – he (goale) had no clue where the puck was… Good setup by Joensuu1-0 ISLES!

First two minutes show a definite WANT to play this game.

Jamie Fraser – first NHL game – congrats! But pairing him up with Fritz and Rechlicz…. Interesting.

4:55 in – Fritz and David Koci – get into it – and a lot of scrumming after the officials get in there. Nice job by the 6’8″ monster. Fritz wes spinning Koci around like a rag doll.

Why do I have the strange feeling that this game will be much longer than most games. The over/under on majors should be about 5.

Martinek pulls down Malone (allegedly) and takes a penalty at 5:38.

Thompson gets a gift, and just misses getting a shorty.

Tampa PP has some good guys, but you can see that they are missing number 4 in front…

Good kill boys!

Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto was talking and mentioned that Long Island needs a new state of the art Nassau Coliseum. Which is political speak for “Get your ass in Gear, Kate Murray and get this project approved!”

11 minutes in – not a real flow to the game – couple of nice opportunities – one by Tambellini. Tampa – good effort in front of Danis – but he made the good stop.

Well – it is definitely apparent that these two teams are 28th and 30th in the NHL respectively.

Joensuu – point blank shot – stopped by McKenna.

I think cow-tipping

Tampa gets a penalty at the 17:37 mark - see if the Isles take advantage on the PP. Gervais and Weight at the points. Tamby Bailey and Comeau up front. Weight is so cool as a cucumber out there, but inexperience of the rest of the unit shows. As Rod Gilbert says - JUST SHOOT THAT PUCK! You can not get a goal, unless you tee it up (Unless you are O'Byrne of the Canadiens)!

Period ends with the shots at 7-6. Be back for the third. I am going to enjoy the view from Section 317

3rd Period

Back from my seats. The last five minutes were pretty good, with a good power play goal by Martinek – a blast! Tampa answered back with a power play goal of their own, courtesy of Matt Pettinger.

A great fight with the “RECKER” taking on Zenon Konopka (is he the lead guitarist of the Sex Pistols?) which ended up with the Tampa player having a little medical issues that needed to be attended to.

Another scrum to the right of the Tampa netminder at the end of the period, proved the point that the players are not liking each other too much tonight.

Expect the third period to be extra chippy, and a lot of scores wanting to be settled.

HERE WE GO…

I said faceoffs were important – after 2 periods – Isles 24 for 41 or 59%. Bailey – 6 for 11 – Park 3 for 3

2:00 – Tambellini hit the post, that rang my ears off.

Another thing I noticed from the scoresheets. Isles outhit Tampa 33-22 after 2, with th “RECKER” leading the way with 5.

I see a great deal of maturation from Bruno. He looks a lot more comfortable in his own zone, and when a mistake is made – he will not usually panic, and fix the problem. I really think that he has made strides to correct some of the problems that he has had in the past.

I really like Jesse Joensuu. He is a big man that I think has a great upside to him. Fraser has looked OK. Probably got a lot of the “Just keep it simple speech.”

Game has gone back ad forth up the ice with some odd man rushes. Iggy had a great shot on McKenna, that he got the left pad on. Speaking of goalies – Danis has played a better game tonight. Simplifying his movements.

Great opportunity by Joensuu to get his second NHL goal, but Matt Smaby hooked him to give the Isles another power play opportunity. Which Josh Bailey made a great move and slid the puck under McKenna’s pads to give the Isles a 3-1 lead!

Gervais with 2 points on the night.

But to most fans wanting the number 1 pick.. the question is:

Should we be tanking?

I say shut up to that.

By the way – did you see the stunt that Avery the DIRTBAG did to Tim Thomas? And they say that he is REHABILITATED? Send him to Hungary – and make him play in the Transylvanian league.

Witt got involved in another nice scrum at the end of a play. Still only 2 fights for the game, well under the over/under of 5 that I predicted tonight. However – we got another power play.

Four minutes to go – the Isles look like they should pull this one off. If anything major happens – I will amend this post. Again – look for the quotes and other stuff in another post tomorrow.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME

3. Martinek – smooth play and his first power play goal.
2. Gervais – 2 helpers and ever increasing maturity on the D line
1. Park – Goal and assist – and showing the kids what a vet SHOULD do.

Hurting Units heading into Philly

Another rough loss last night, and to make matters worse, the Isles head into Philly, a beaten and hurting team.

Sutton and Thompson are out, Fritz and Callahan replace them.

We are heading to ECHL players real soon, if this keeps up.

I agree with Chris Botta, as much as losing another body is a tough thing, I think Bailey SHOULD play the WJC’s in a few weeks. Confidence up the wazoo, and this is what 18 and 19 year old Canadian’s DREAM of playing in. This should be a no brainer for Garth. Let him go.

I know that in this league, anyone can go into a building and pull off a gem. However, the Isles have lost, I believe, 6 in a row in Philly, and they are playing well of late. This is going to look bad.

Comrie, I hear, is back soon… I see a lot of excitement coming from that comment….

I really think that Joey Mac needs a break tonight. I know that Danis had a meltdown in his one game here, but what the heck, let’s see what he has, against a team like the Flyers. Ricky is 3 weeks away from the lineup, and I think Joey needs a day to contemplate life, and other variables.

Question of the Day? Will Fritz see more than 2 minutes tonight?

I like Comeau first two games back. Energy, and smartness. This is the player that many were expecting to see on the Island, not the one that was invisible in camp and exhibitions.

As far as last night, it was nice to hear the comments of one Mr. Blake. He spent a long time here, and deserved, in some cases, a better fate, but he takes it all in stride and moves forward. Nice job!

We get Pittsburgh on Thursday, and Columbus on Saturday. Tonight’s game is on Versus, which means all of the US can see how horrible we really have been. And also – to have other announcers tell us how rough we look.

Just what I need on a Tuesday evening.

Enjoy it – well – tolerate it.

Tough 3rd again

A couple of scrums, and an unlikely scorer does the Isles in last night.

Of all folks, Brashear beats us with a slide of the stick, and once again, the team looks bad after a significant number of days off? We know that this team works hard at practices, I wonder why the team is so sluggish that first game back?

Kreskin

It is a mystery? Please Kreskin, give us the answer…

Nice return by Silly. Winning 11 of 19 faceoffs. A big plus.

Three Isles Stars.

3. MacDonald – 42 saves. Yes he gave up 4 but only 1 was what I call ‘saveable’

2. Hunter – 11th goal – had only 12 last year. What a nice job he is doing.

1. Silly – nice to see him return.

I just dont get Fritz being here taking 100 seconds a night? It does not serve a purpose… Jackman – he has a role and had a solid game last night.

And please, let’s end the Tambellini saga now! This is getting ridiculous. We are not going to have another David Volek moment (for those that do not know (and there may be a few) – Volek was one despised by many fans until he scored that magic goal in 1993 – eliminating the Pens). Tambellini is not cutting it, and guys like Trevor Smith, Blake Comeau and others should be up here contributing.

Well – got that off my chest. See you at the barn tomorrow.

Yecch – round 2

Even when Nate got that goal 2 minutes in, I did not have that comfy feeling in my bones that we were going to get out of Boston with a point.

Was I right.

With Buffalo – I knew that the team was not doing it. With Boston – it is just seeing a strong, united team that is playing on all cylinders, but the best part about Boston, is that it is a very young team.

Is Lucic going to be a great player in this league for a long time to come. He is on 21. Kessel is only 21 as well. This team is got the foundation for a very good team for a long time to come.

But enough about the competition. Let’s talk about our ineptitude.

First statement – Tambellini MUST GO! This so called experiment has to end now! He is not mustering up anything in this level. A few weeks ago – Billy Jaffe made a great point about #15. He said (and I am paraphrasing), that he needs to make a stand and if he feels that he needs to change his game if needed. He is not making it with the skill set he has now. Too many chances and not enough results.

Him and Franz Nielsen at the same time were called out on this blog. Lately, Nielsen stepped up and did the job, until Mike Mottau from the Devils snapped and knocked #51 out for 12 weeks. He stepped up the game, but Tambellini did not!

Nate came back and got a goal right away, which I was happy about. He replaced Fritz, for which I was glad to see. We can not have a guy up here, playing 2 minutes a night, and getting in a fight. This team does NOT need that.

Well – Ottawa, this year’s whipping boys for the Isles come in for the second and final time tomorrow. Simply – the third period must be better. Nine goals in the last 2 games in period 3 is NOT good.

Start praying folks!

Witter returns – Silly soon back….

Wow – good news, #32 is back in the lineup.

He is one that was sorely missed in the lineup. Although others have admirably stepped up their games for him, it will be nice to have the guys play their normal time and usage.

Also this is a major increase in the team’s physicality. I can see a more stronger team both on the puck and on the boards making nuisances. Also having Fritz up with Jackman, gives the team a strong presence.

Tonight – they are facing a Devil team that won last night – so it is up to the team to get the system moving quickly, and make the home team chase and make mistakes.

Tomorrow – they have Buffalo who were really spanked the other night, and may be a little peeved. Especially Ryan Miller, who gave up a seven-spot, and usually is so good against Long Island.

Monday – Montreal – they are sliding a little, but as we all know in person – don’t give them a moment of breathing room, because you will be chopped down, to say the least. And those damn 3rd periods have killed us this year. However, in the past few games, this team has handled them and survived; getting out of the basement to boot.

Let’s hope this weekend will continue that trend. Have a good weekend.

Flyers 3 Isles 2 – Improvement all around

I am just going to give a brief thought synopsis, you can get the news anywhere.

1. Thought the team played a strong game. The first period was not as strong, but the team improved by each period, and stood up to the Flyers. Especially in the 3rd period – the forecheck was brilliant.

2. “Amazing Andy” – great presence of mind to hold the shot, and get the puck to bounce off the Flyers D and in…

3. I think MacDonald was fine in net. Two of the goals again, were shots that got to the Flyers players off a miscue. Just about any goalie would not be able to get the shot. Some of his saves were outstanding. Even got a skate to the mask. Thank God the blade hit his neck guard, or we would have had a Malarchuk incident.

4. Sutton back was a nice thing. It gives the D a large presence, and he was put to the test immediately against Scott Hartnell. Him and Streit worked well.

5. Welcome to the NHL Mitch Fritz! His name sounds like your accountant, but he does not look like one. He is huge and I am looking forward to seeing him get into some pugilistic tendencies.

On a score of 1-10, on the Isles play, I would give them a 7. Improvement all around. Get a break or two, and the 1 point gained could have easily been 2.

My Isles Three Stars

3. Nate Thompson – true grit. He has stepped up his game.
2. Trent Hunter – hitting machine, and Biron had a lucky stop on his point blank effort.
1. Andy Hilbert – You can see that he is a Gordon disciple. His game is much better than last year.

I will not be blogging live tomorrow. I will be sitting in my own seat, and being a fan. I will write a little on Sunday about the game.

Enjoy Halloween, and make sure that your kids are safe…
