STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - United States crushed France 7-2 while Canada squeezed past Slovakia 3-2 as the preliminary round of the world ice hockey championships got underway on Friday. France went into a surprise 1-0 lead midway through the first period but Kyle Okposo of the New York Islanders soon leveled. The superior fitness of the Americans told the longer the game went on and they eventually swept the French aside in the third period of the Group H game. ...

We covered almost all of these incidents in our post on the Philadelphia Flyers' Game 3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, but this compendium of hits, fights and cheap shots from alander94 on YouTube really does bring home how [expletive] insane the nastiness was in this game: Sidney Crosby: For the last time, not a goody two-shoes. As was previously reported Monday, the NHL will have Arron Asham and James Neal answer for their actions in Monday hearings — Neal, in fact, will have two of them. Asham has been offered an in-person hearing Tuesday morning for his match penalty for cross-checking Brayden Schenn at 14:15 of the first period. Asham received a match penalty on the hit. Neal's hearings focus on the hit against Sean Couturier in the third period, as well as the charging penalty he received for a hit on Claude Giroux later in the period. Neal was not penalized on the Couturier hit. There are three themes coming out of this mess for the Penguins, heading into Game 4.

Saturday’s Three Stars: Boyle over; Bergeron leads B’s; save of the year candidate? (Puck Daddy)

So … hockey. No. 1 Star: Dan Boyle, San Jose Sharks The veteran defenseman sent the Sharks into the No. 7 seed with a goal 3:58 into overtime, as San Jose defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2 . Earlier in the game, he gave the Sharks new life when he scored 35 seconds into the third period to cut their deficit to 2-1. Justin Williams had a goal and an assist in a losing effort. No. 2 Star: Teddy Purcell, Tampa Bay Lightning While his teammate Steven Stamkos got all the attention for scoring his 60th goal , Purcell's hat trick sent the Lightning home winners in their 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Purcell scored the OT game-winner at 1:08 of the extra session, and was a plus-4. Jim Slater had two goals in a losing effort.

Grabner scores 2 in 3rd, to lift Isles (AP)

The New York Islanders skated off with a wild and satisfyingly gritty win in their home finale. Their only regret is they didn't do enough in the first 80 games of the season to make this one meaningful. Michael Grabner scored his second go-ahead goal of the third period with just 46.8 seconds left, John Tavares helped set up two others to reach 50 assists this season, and the Islanders...

Devils score 2 in final 2 minutes, top Islanders (AP)

Marek Zidlicky picked the perfect time for his first goal of the season and his first since joining the New Jersey Devils. The veteran defenseman, acquired two weeks earlier from the Minnesota Wild, scored with 1:25 left in the third period -- just 14 seconds after teammate David Clarkson tied the game -- to lift the resilient Devils past the New York Islanders 2-1 on Saturday night.
